Rah! I love X-mas

lol, well...the monitor was 2nd hand (but can't argue at 60GPB). The total came to about 250GBP.
Ooh and I just won that 9800SE AIW off Ebay for 100GBP (I have to pay for some of that though, lol).

(see my post on keyboard annoyances in 'Computer Accessories' for the reason why I keep putting GBP instead of the pound sign :P)

Greetings all. I'm new here and have been searching the forums in regards to my own questions. I'm rather new to computer building and have a question so I'm hijacking this thread.

I have the same mobo as the original poster and a 2400 Athlon. Currently I have a crappy 128 and 256 stick of RAM in there. I'm not sure of the speed (presumably 2100 or 2700).

Now, I want to play World of Warcraft and am aware my graphics card is now low end (sigh, was top end $300 when I got it) so I am upgrading the slow way, first with the RAM. I want to get the PC3200 which both my processor and mobo supports, but not in dual channel (fine by me).

My question is, will this cause a heat problem? Do I need to buy some kind of heat spreader? Is this even worth it or should I just buy the 1gig of PC2700 and just not plan on using it again? The plan was when I upgrade to transfer the PC3200 RAM over to the new system. Or is this a case that I need to "overclock" and frankly that scares the beejeebers outa me. :)

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How do you find out what type of ram you have in your mobo? Is there special software which will do it for you?

Software called Everest will tell you all sorts about your system.

Your VC is way more than needed to play WOW.

Thanks for the reply. :)

My question is though, if I buy PC3200 RAM for my Athlon 2400, is this going to require 'overclocking' or is it a waste of higher memory (I am planning to upgrade my processor in a year or so.) etc, as in my above post. And do I need to buy another fan if I do this? I have a case fan in the back, the side, and of course a thermaltake on the processor and my VC comes stock with one.

Or should I just buy 1 gig of PC2700 and just kiss the $90 goodbye and buy new RAM later when I upgrade?
