Raid, How good is it?

I have two identical hard drives(200GB, 10,000 RPM), and i was wondering if setting up raid would improve performance in a serious way, or would i just be wasting my time.

BTW,I'm running Win XP

well which RAID are you trying to set up? it really depends if you think it's worth it or not. i'm assuming you're asking about RAID-0: you can sacrifice one whole physical drive but you wont get double the performance for speed. it's not really for the average user. but if all you're going for is performance, then go for it

Yeah, i was asking about RAID 0, but i'm wondering if the performance increase is worth the risk of losing my data if there is a crash.

Probably not. RAID0 is very fast under for specific things but there is 2x the chance that you will lose everything.

Under most real world conditions there is no difference at all, save for in your head. I suppose it might even look good in a sig, but other than that it's pretty much pointless and useless (unless you believe in synthetic benchmarks... but if you give them weight, you truly need to find a new hobby *cough* HD Tach *cough*).

The only time you'll see any difference is in huge, contiguous media files.
