RAM amount matter?

My Asus P5LD2 motherboard can run DDR2 667 memory and I see several types on newegg for 1 gig and 2 gigs that they claim are compatible.

However upon rereading my manual for the motherboard it mentions only being able to recognize up to 1 gig ram modules and does not mention 2 gig ram at all. I was wondering if this means that the motherboard would not be able to recognize 2 gig ram chips? The motherboard does only go up to 4 gigabytes of ram. Any help would be appreciated. :)

The motherboard only has 4 ram slots. This was my thinking as well as evidence for only recognizing 1 gigabyte ram chips. Four, 1 gigabyte ram chips would be the maximum the motherboard could handle. And yet I wonder why they would list on Newegg as 2 gigabyte ram chips as compatible with my motherboard. Which is why I'm asking around.

My friend helped me build it about 3 years ago, it doesn't mention anything about 2 gig chips in the manual so clearly they weren't common at the time. I'm still unsure.

I wouldn't risk it if the board was made for 1GB chips then I highly doubt that it will work with newer 2GB chips just get 4 1GB chips 4GB is enough for just about anything.
