RAM Bottleneck?

Hello all,

Just a quick question; am looking to upgrade my PC at some point in the near future, and being the tight guy I am, am trying to save as much dough as possible.

Not planning on skimping on GFX, processor, PSU as I see this as integral to performance (pure gaming).

Plan on keeping my HDD - it stores information fine for me, CD drive obviously. But the RAM is the big question - I have 2x2 and 1x2gb sticks but they're only @ 800 mhz 5:6:6:18. Eventually, I guess, I'll upgrade the RAM but for now my question is as follows:

If I stick this RAM with, say, a HD 6950 and a similar quality processor, will it bottleneck my system? What effects will it have on my overall performance?

Depends if your talking about DDR2 800, not one of the fastest around anymore. And what motherboard your getting. Most new boards now are DDR3
 
DDR2 800, yup.. don't really understand how the speed of RAM relates to peformance though.. I mean I haven't seen any practical benchmarks of, say, 1600mhz vs. DDR2 800, and its effects on FPS (more or less the only thing that matters to me - max settings, quality picture, decent FPS).

For your second part - can DDR3 systems not run DDR2? Don't want to buy a crappy motherboard and limit any future upgrades just to save a few quid now.
 
There is not much difference in like going DDR 800 and 1066. But there is quiet abit difference in DDR3 1600 and DDR2 800. DDR3 1600 runs at 800mhz. and DDR2 800 runs at 400mz. 400mhz. in memory is a big difference.

No you cant run DDR2 in a DDR3 board. Well I have saw some odd ball boards with both slots, But I would not suggest one.
