RAM capacity of my laptop

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad SL500, and SIW says that its RAM capacity is 8GB, but crucial.com RAM utility says 4GB is max.
I would like to install 8GB, as I just installed an SSD in it and want to use the cache-file-to-RAM feature of Firefox portable to save writes to the drive, but would like to know which one is correct.

So, the 8 GB that SIW reports is not possible? It is 64bit OS, because I planned on eventually getting 8 GB
it currently has 3 GB in it, I would like to replace the 1 and 2 GB sticks with 2x4GB sticks.

4GB is your max, not because of the OS, but because that is all your system can handle, regardless of whether it has 32 or 64 bit OS on there.

Regard to when to use a 64 bit OS, any more than 3.5 GB system memory and you should really have a 64 bit OS in order for the system to be able to fully utilise it all

Yep 4 gb is the max just yesterday i returned a computer job where the owner said her new windows 7 laptop was running slow and that she wanted more ram. being a 32 bit OS I told her this was not possible unless she wanted to buy Windows 7 64 bit and with that buy the extra ram I think she realised what this would cost and said 4 gb (2.8 gb usable) would be fine.

Please check out this great program called System Information for Windows if you haven't already. And buy the author a cup of coffee like I did (Paypal link on his page, and I swear I am not affiliated with them, I am just very impressed by their program and the support they offer for it)
