ram compatibility

my computer runs on a 512 MB PC2700 DDR 333 MHz. i was planning on upgrading the computer to 1 gb of ram, so i bought a 512 MB PC3200 DDR 400 MHz because i found out that the PC3200 is backwards compatible with the PC2700. however when i installed the PC3200, my computer did not recognize the new hardware. is it because of the difference between the 333 mhz of the PC2700 and the 400 mhz of the PC3200? is there anyway to get it to work and run 1 gb of ram?

As I've mentioned before, not everything works as it's suppose to. Yes, technically PC3200 RAM should work with your system, but I'm not at all suprised it didn't... Sometimes even correct RAM doesn't work with systems.

I'm sure if you look around you will find the correct RAM, but it's hard to say exactly what would work and what wouldn't. Typically, cheaper brands have less compatibility, but I've seen high-end brands with their own problems.

If you know your motherboard(well, for a custom-built machine) many manufacturers have "tested" memory that works with the board. Finding as list like that would be the most beneficial.

First off not all DDR400 will backclock to the slower speed. If you installed the new memory on the B not A slot with the older 333 on A that would cause one problem to start with there. The faster memory goes on the primary channel. The second item of concern is whether you mixed single sided memory with dual sided? They never mix! You should have bought a matching PC2700 dimm or replaced the first with two DDR400 dimms.
