Ram help! Please

If the drive is clicking and constantly spinning up and down, there is nothing you can do about it. Its shot.

yeah ive ordered a new one from ebay, in the mean time i have my secondary IDE drive, can you offer any advice on the RAM issue?

Like I said before, they most likely don't play well together when all 4 are used together. However, you may have a faulty stick. Have you tried running Memtest on your memory?

You would think so, but I've tried memory from my brothers PC (all the same ram type) and that didn't work either? And no I haven't tried memtest, how would I go about that?

You will need to download memtest and create a bootable cd.

http://www.memtest86.com/downloads/memtest86-iso.zip

Unzip that file and use burning software that will write the iso image to cd. If running windows 7, then this can do it without using a third party program. If you aren't running windows 7 then you will need to download a program such as IMGburn and use it. Then you would need to boot to the memtest cd and it will automatically start testing the memory for errors.

thanks a bunch! is it acceptable to burn the iso to a usb stick as i have about a million of those, but like one cd which im pretty sure is full. or should i buy one?

Yes it supports booting from USB, I'll download and test that tomorrow afternoon, and let you know when it finishes/the results. Thanks!

memtest reported that there were no errors at all, however it said i only had 3072mb of memory even though i had 4096mb installed

Either you have a bad mmory slot, memory stick or the one stick of memory isn't fully inserted into the slot.

i'll try moving the ram around/reseating it tomorrow, if not i will return the ram i have bought and by some new. Can you recommend any? ebay listings etc, or even ram specs i should use

Okay so I have now deduced that all the slots and all the ram sticks work. I have tried every single possible combination of old and new ram. I can get the computer to run, if I put two old and one new, or one old and one new sitck it will run (totalling 3072mb of ram) however when I fill the 4th slot and try and boot with 4096mb it won't boot??

Okay so I've now gotten it to boot, however my BIOS says only 3072mb are available even though all the sticks are DEFINITELY working

currently no operating system as my hard drive got fried, but before it did i was running windows 7 64 bit, also i occasionally plug in my ide hdd and run linux mint
