Ram help

Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite P25-S5093 and it is really low on Ram that I need for games that are new, also a vid card issue I have.

First of all, I have 512 RAM and i was wondering if IK could increase it to more than 1GB, hopefully 2GB's. Is that possible? If it is, then what specific RAM should I buy?

Secondly, what is the size of this video card this laptop has? (NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200). 128mb I suppose no? And I was also wondering if there is ANY way to either upgrade to a new video card or to do whatever is needed to change video size to at least 250mb's??

The first thing to look at on any laptop or desktop model board is the specifications to see just what it will support. For that model, "512MB (2048MB max) DDRAM | Memory Slots available for Upgrade: 1 | Maximum RAM per available slot: 1024MB"
indicating the maximum of 2gb of ram there as seen on the link you posted.

Newer video cards for laptops can be used with some seeing 256mb of onboard GDDR memory. On the older model there those would work while you wouldn't see the full benefit. But the 32mb model in there is one main problem to start with for gaming. Most games look for at least 64mb while the games in the last 2-3yrs. are expecting 128mb.

is it possible to upgrade a video card in a laptop?
 
There are new models for laptops like the ATI X1550 model to look over. It depends whether a unit allows for a removable card or is strictly run by onboard on some rather limited models. You won't see the latest 8800 or HD 2900XT models there. But you should see a newer card go in without problems.
 
So 2 GB's, nice ok.

And PC eye, can you suggest some video cards i could get for my laptop please? (If my laptop will allow update on vid cards of course...)

If the laptop allows for an expansion card I can refer you to someone who works with laptops regularly and is well familiar with models to look over there. The ATI model mentioned is for laptops not desktops. Unfortunately newegg doesn't separate those into a different catagory. There's a silght difference between ones for portables and those commonly heard about for a regular desktop system.

One persion right here at CF that's well familiar with models you could consider there is The_Other_One. When he's on try pming him on this. He should be able to give you a good idea on NVidia models as well as ATI if you can upgrade. That model there does sound like an older expansion type card and not simply an onboard video chip when the specifications were looked over.

Either put in your PC model manually, or more to the point, let it scan your system.

It will tell you what RAM you have, how many open slots, and will suggest options and tell you just how much of an upgrade said options are. It helped out a lot when I got more RAM for my computer.

The maximum there is 2gb of memory with 1gb being the largest dimm size you can use. Just looking any laptop's or desktop's specifications for board information will show how much(2048mb max.there) and how many slots(one for upgrade on that model). T_O_O can help you out selecting a better newer card for that model card. 32mb for video these days scares me! :confused: wat dis? :eek: only 32mb! :P
 
Hi, well I have a few more doubts. The RAM's recommended were these ones and I noticed they are all "200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 266 (PC 2100)". So I went out to look for some RAMs under that description, and I wasnt that lucky.

The "SO-" before "DIMM" means its meant for laptops?

Does it HAVE to be 266 ? or could it be 333 or 400MHz?

Which of these would be compatible with my laptop?:

I didnt write down the 128, 256 and 512MB RAM's, because im looking for 1 GB.

I guess the DDR2 shouldnt be there?

And btw, it has to be 200 pin right?
 
that stuffs tooooooo expensive why do you want that instead of the stuff I recommended and it will only run at 266
 
Of the three brands there Kingston takes the lead right away. Unfortunately memory for portable units usually does see higher prices since you are paying for the convience of a self contained system being portable to start with. The best deals are always going to be seen on desktop memory since many build their own cases and want memory.

I would suggest running a search for deals at other sites as well. The product specifications didn't show what memory speed was supported at the link you posted for that vendor or even at the manufacturer's specifications page seen at http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...BV_EngineID=ccchaddlmhllmdecgfkceghdgngdgnj.0 One page seen at shopping.com lists DDR266 for the fastest supported.

Hmm I've been thinking that it may be best to simply buy a new better laptop rather than upgrade (the little i can) this laptop. This is because I want a better video card (idk 256mb least) and much more ram and a lighter laptop (LOL this one weights tooo damn much).

HP Pavilion dv6500t
HP Pavilion tx1000z


Any recommendations?

Besides the double post there the first link shows a better model for gaming as well as options for video while the second model is good for multitasking and has a serious lack seen in the video dept.! A Core 2 Duo would be the better for Intel over Celerons anyways.

But you have to remember one main thing about any portable unit. You can only upgrade them only so far over a custom model that will cost high. Alienware wants some $6000US for a custom gaming model. :eek:! is right there!
 
Yeah sry for the double post. And I see... alright so the dv6500t is better for gaming, which is what i want.

And yes I wanted an alienware a long time ago, but it was too damn expensive.

When I took a look at Alienware's super high prices seen for both portables and desktops I said you got to be kidding! No one in their right mind is going to pay out thousands to see the same thing you put together yourself for far less! You can pay someone to put a good case together far cheaper then seen there! :rolleyes: But some are still guilable or simply have money to throw to see them stay in business.

When you see a duplicate post you can simply click the edit button and delete message or have a mod take care of it for you. Thought I would advise you on that. It's easy to correct.
