ram install problem

I have 2 slots on my motherboard for ram. I recently installed an extra 256mb ram card into the 2nd slot. After doing so, I got an error stating a problem with the primary slave drive. I removed the card and the error went away. I re-installed the new card into the original #1 slot and the error re-appeared. Now I cant get the error message to go away no matter what I do.

What happened? How do I fix it??

Thanks in advance for your help,
Mike

you can start by posting some information on your motherboard and you ram. are you sure the sticks are compatible with the mobo?

Yeah for sure, need some information ... sounds possibly like the timings set for memory will be too tight for the new stick. Have a run at Memtest to check that

I am not sure what kind of ram I have but I have a:

PC Chips m863g motherboard w/ amd athlon

with 2 ram cards of 256 mb each. The ram seems to work ok, the computer shows it at start up, but gives me the primary slave drive error. Once I hit F2, I can get by it and the machine works fine. But it does not show my 2nd hard drive.

Someone told me resetting CMOS might work, do you agree?

with the primary slave drive? try replugging the hard drives in and reseating both sticks of ram. if this doesn't work id say motherboard/ram incompatibility is whats wrong.

How can I find out what is compatible with my motherboard?

Once I get compatible ram cards, will the error automatically go away?

How much ram can I have total with a 1.2 ghz processor?

Some motherboards have a list of "use this memory of else" while others have a list of "use any memory except this" and other have "use whatever" ... see your manufacturer's website about the mobo you have :)

Depends on the mobo
