RAM install will not work

I have an older HP pavilion 900mhz machine that only will allow 512 megs of ram because of the cpu limitations. The primary slot has one 256 stick (Kinsington KTH-PVL100/256 and the second slot has a 64 MB stick) and all works ok. I replaced the 64 with another 256 but the computer will not boot. If I go back to the 64 then all is well. Is it possible the new 256 is the incorrect frequency? How can I tell?

The old old HP's were very picky about what memory they needed to work properly. If you have the model number then you can go to www.crucial.com or www.newegg.com and do the memory configurator for it and they will give you compatible chips. But if I were you, I would save my money and get a new system built.

Pavilion Memory issue

Yes I think your correct. I purchased the ram stick online and I'll try and return it. Get a new system sounds like a better permanent fix. LOL

Pavilion memory issues

I got to the point that each 256 can be installed seperatly and all boots fine and windows loads fine. If I put both pair in at the same time with the original in slot 1 then it boots ok but fails or hangs a fwe seconds ater windows starts loading. I checked with the suggested web site and the ram I purchased is correct. Is there a bios upgrade that needs to happen. This system is a Pavilion 8756c and the ram is KTH-PVL100/256. The operating system is XP professional with SP3 installed. Its an old system that originally had Microsoft ME. Its got a very nice graphics card and a 10 watt amplified speaker card so I kinda still like it.
