Hey thanks for viewing.

So i have 4gb of RAM but apparently only around 3 - 3.5 GB is showing up. Any ideas?

Cheers

Oh, you have the 32bit version of Vista, which see's roughly around 3 to 3.25gb of RAM.

This must be the most popular question on computer forums today, in order to see all 4GB of RAM, you must purchase the Windows Vista 64bit disk from Microsoft.

The most a 32bit system can recognize is 3.5 the last 512mb is normally used on other resources

to get the 4 gig working you will need to upgrade to 64 bit OS, you are currently on 32 bit, which allows 3-3.5GB at most, 64 bit allows (pretty much, there are limits, but sillyly high) unlimited RAM.

Providing you still have the code for your OS then you can upgrade to 64 bit with it.

I think the tool posted works or you can download the operating system you are using, and ONLY the one you are using, from a torrent, install THE ONE YOU ARE USING now and then use the code. You must use the version you have, so if you are on vista premium, you must use vista premium, otherwse it is illegal. Make sure the one you download and install is 64 bit (x64 for XP, x86 for vista, it is also known as) otherwise you will get the same problem.

The post saying you must buy the windows 64 bit version isn't strictly true. This is because when you buy windows, or any piece of software from OS, to games, to anti virus, you aren't paying for the code, you are paying for the key, the liscence to use it. Because the codes work on 64 AND 32 bit versions of windows once you have bought a copy you can use either 64 or 32 bit versions of the same operating system.

You can call microsoft if you arent sure and tell them your ram problem and they will tell you the same thing, i had the same problem upgrading my step-dads laptop to 4GB of RAM, and got told what i just posted above.

Interesting Aastii, ive had my fair run of risky operations on my pc (anything from beng plagued by trojans to frying my motherboard with static from my fingers) so im wondering if theirs a sort of easy-legit way to upgrade to 64bit AND keep all my settings and programs?

Thanks

When I said buy, I didnt mean re-buy a key, I meant the 64-bit disk costs $10 for all valid 32-bit customers. I believe upgrading to 64bit requires clean wipe. Acronis may be able to help out, but its not free.

Core2Deao the only way that you can legitimately upgrade to 64 bit and keep the files is to back it all up.

You can't upgrade to x64 from x32 OS so it requires a full wipe. You can however pute everything on another computer on the network that is also running vista and use the file sending thing they have, ive never used it and dont know where it is because ive never had a need to, but im sure it would work like it says on the tin.

As i said, normally torrents are illegal, but as you are not downloading anything you have not bought before, so long as you intend to only use the key you were supplied with, it is not illegal, the only reason microsoft say, "give us $10" is because they are tighter than a badgers arse. Bill Gates didn't get to be one of the richest guys in the world by giving free stuff away willy nilly. Microsoft could easily post a download of vista ALL versions because they won't work fully without being activated, and who wants an OS where you can't add or edit folders?
