I have 4 GB of G~skill PB 8500 RAM. I was playing a game when I noticed a bit of lag, so I exited and went into my task manager in hope to see whats wrong. I noticed it said I only had 2 GB of ram. I said "bull" and restarted my desktop in hope that it would recognize all of my ram. It did nothing. My MOBO normally beeps once acknowledging its start up, but nothing happened. No beep, nothing, and my monitor did nothing either, just went to sleep. I took out a stick and it booted fine, but with both in it does nothing.

Now let me say this, there are 4 slots, 2 yellow and 2 black:

The instructions clearly state that RAM is to be inserted in the same color slot for 2 sticks. Look at the picture on newegg and think of this>
When I put my 2 RAM sticks into the same color slots, it doesn't boot, but when I put them into different color slots next to each other, it says I only have 2 GB of ram but take a look at this:

CPU-Z says I have 4 Gigs of ram any my task manager says I have 2. Also I went to my computer and it said I have 4 GB.

If anyone understands my problem, or for that matter can make sense of what I just said, Please help me. Most appreciated, strokes.
 
In the task manager, click resource monitor.
Go to the memory tab.
There should be a bar labeled "Physical Memory"
There will be...
Available:
Cached:
Total:
Installed:

What does the "Total" and "Installed" parts say?
 
My OS is vista just so everyone knows.

About the system resource monitor, I don't see a "physical memory" bar, just memory.

Edit, in my regular task manager under "Performance" I see "Physical Memory" Total 2046, Cached 1426, Free 41"
 
Sorry, I assumed the resource monitor was the same in Vista and Win7.
ok, Open the Start Menu - right click Computer - click properties. Under System, how much RAM does it show you have installed?
 
Hmmmm...
I'm inclined to say that your other 2GB of address space is being used up by other hardware but that is a lot to be used up...

As a last resort try this:
Start - Run (if your start menu doesn't have a run button just press the Win + R keys)
type msconfig
go to the Boot tab
Advanced Options
Make sure "Maximum memory" is unchecked

If it is fine then you may want to check your BIOS for something suspicious.

I'll go look around at your motherboard manual to see if I can find anything

After looking through the manual, I couldn't find anything to deal with a memory hole.

Try moving your RAM around, this isn't likely to work but you never know until you try.
 
I figured it out!!!
I took One ram stick out, it worked fine. I swapped it and turned it on and nothing happened. I have a defective ram stick. I'll be calling newegg soon.
