i currently have 2GB of RAM on Vista Home premium 32-bit. would it be beneficial to upgrade to 4GB or would that not really do any thing for the 32-bit OS?

The only way it would make a difference is if your system is eating all your 2gbs and using virtual memory then 4gbs would make a difference, but if your not using all your 2gbs then it would just be sitting there. And 32bit windows is not going to see all the 4gbs

What are you using your computer for? Gaming? If you are using it for gaming it would likely be better to purchase a good video card rather than more Random Access Memory.

If you do already have a good video card and want to upgrade to more memory it wouldn't be beneficial to upgrade to more than 3 gigabytes. A 32-bit operating system will not recognize much more than 3.25 gigabytes.

Actually, 32bit vista forces an arbitrary maximum of 3.12GB of RAM. The actual amount available may be less though, it depends on the hardware.

Hmm I read it as saying 3.12 is the max.
The reduction in available system memory depends on the devices that are installed in the computer. However, to avoid potential driver compatibility issues, the 32-bit versions of Windows Vista limit the total available memory to 3.12 GB. See the "More information" section for information about potential driver compatibility issues.

so would it be a problem to have 4GB installed or would it just not recognize some?

also do you think it would increase performance to upgrade from 2GB?

There is no problem, some just wouldn't be recognized.

It probably wouldn't increase performance over 2GB very much.

If you put 4 gigabytes of Random Access Memory in a system that is using a 32-bit operating system anywhere from around 1000 to 819 megabytes will not be utilized. As Cromewell stated above it probably wouldn't increase performance very much upgrading to over 2 gigabytes of memory very much.
