RAM problem :(

Hi,

I have just purchased a new stick of 1GB RAM. I also have a 1GB stick in my computer(i wanted to make it into a 2GB system). I have put this new stick of RAM in my computer but it is only showing it as a 512mb stick. Also if i stick the RAM in on its own the computer won't start properly.

Do you think this is a broken piece of RAM and that i should replace it?

Since your system doesn't boot with only the new RAM I would exchange it as it's probably bad. If it did boot with it but read as 512mb I'd say you were given a 512MB stick by mistake.

When i place it into my computer with my working 1GB stick it doesn't boot up first i have to press restart then its fine. And when its stuck in on its own it just goes BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPP lol so im guessing its a dodgy stick of RAM

Usually beeping has to do with ram

Usually beeping has do with something in your computer being not quite right. Beeps don't just have to do with RAM. http://www.amptron.com/html/bios.beepcodes.html

Yes a lot of the time it's RAM related but it can mean a bunch of other stuff too. In this case it is RAM related though.
