RAM question DDR

Working on my coworkers commputer. He has a gateway 2.0Ghz P4 computer, 128MB Ram DDR lol, and about 35Gb free space. His computer was crashing, not booting up, not starting in safe mode, running very slow, ect. I tried to install malwarebytes anti malware but could not get it to install I thought from viruses. I reformated with his xp and driver disc. I can't get Windows service pack 2 to install. I then looked again at his ram and saw the low specs. I am advising him to buy the max his system can handle which is 2 512Gb ddr pieces. Before I order this and install it for him is there anything I should check other than the ram? The ram in there is 128 pc2100u. Kinda confused as to the bus speed and what I need to order for him and whether any DDR will do. I just saw one of these computers go for like 10 bucks on ebay lol. It is a gateway Esx 500s.

I am pretty sure the problem was from viruses and lack of RAM. If I might be missing anything please give me some advice, I'd hate to order stuff for him without fixing the problem.

Is the computer booting up now? Just won't install SP2?

If so, download CPU-Z from here.

That will tell you the specifics of the RAM installed, and maybe even the board info.

If not, get Everest Free Edition here.

That will confirm if this is the motherboard your friend has (or not).

The board in the link above has a 2Gig limit of DDR 200/266

I honestly wouldn't put more than 1Gig in that pc as it will run about
$30-40 per Gig.

Yes it is booting up now. It got partway through the SP2 install and said something about not finding a catalog then went through uninstall. I believe it froze afterward or was laggy then it booted to a black screen once then I think failed to boot. Then ChkDisk ran and found numerous errors and removed several files, I think this was part of uninstalling SP2. It boots up now and just runs slow due to the lack of RAM, firefox will crash, and things will stall or fail to run, however I am still not able to get SP2 installed.
