ram question

I have an older gateway solo 1200 I am tinkering with. I am running windows XP home edition version 2002, service pak 2 on it. Celeron processor, 846 MHz 184 MB ram. It runs OK, just slow. I put a 256 MB card in the back but it does not show up in the system, only the 184 MB that is internal I guess. Do I have something turned off somewhere that will not allow the card to be seen by the computer ? I don't know what to look for. I tried another card and the same happened, nothing but 184 MB of ram showing. Please help:http://www.computerforum.com/images/smilies/redface.gif

it sounds like you put your ram in the wrong place if you put it in the back, where exactly are you sticking it into?

Hehe, that's a beast of a laptop ;)

Anyway, I've known of lots of laptops from that era that gave problems with RAM upgrades. Skimming around that laptop can handle up to 320MB of RAM (64MB internal/built in and a 256MB chip). The FSB of that processor is only 100MHz so I assume that's as fast as the RAM is. Sometimes if you try to use 133MHz RAM, it won't work.

I am putting the ram card in the right place. The compartment is actually in the bottom of the laptop, my bad. When I got the laptop it had a 256 card in it but the screen only would show the 184MB. The comp shop where I bought it from ( used of course ) did not know what to do. He had not run across this problem before.
