RAM Questions

First of all I am using a Sony VAIO pcv rs720g with everything as it was out of the box except for a new harddrive. So the specs are;

Pentium 4 Processor 530 w/ hyperthreading (3.0GHz, 1MB L2 Cache)
Intel 915G chipset
512mb pc3200 400MHz DDR (256mb x 2) expandable to 2 Gb

My questions deal with the memory that I would like to upgrade, but am unsure how to go about it. As far as I can tell it has 2 slots, each with 2 sockets, and has been suggested to install memory in pairs? I would like to upgrade to 2GB total, would it best to get 4 512mb cards, 2 1gb cards, or however else? Also, am I looking soley for pc3200 ddr ram?

And finally, being as this is a slightly older computer now, will this memory upgrade really help speed things up while using multiple windows, playing games, etc.? Or in the end am I better off buying a whole new tower?

Simply moving up from 512mb to 2gb(2x1gb recommended) everything will notice a large improvement with Windows running quite a bit smoother. That's relatively a much larger leap performance on the existing system then simply going from 2gb upto 4gb.

In the long run the eventuall move into a new system will see the obvious boost in performance overall with a dual or quad core cpu seeing faster clock speeds as well as faster memory speeds available. That will also include moving up from AGP or integrated onboard video into PCI-Express or PCI-E 2.0 now seen.

If not, what would be a better choice, is there much of a performance difference from higher priced cards?

And then when it comes to installation, I have heard it is not that difficult to do yourself. Just open the case, take the old ram out, insert the new. Anything else I would need to know before doing this, or after installing it?

You would definately be getting a good product with kingston and I can tell you from personal experience that goin from 512 to 2Gb will make a HUGE improvement in speed. Also, you might want to look on ebay, I got some brand new RAM on there for a much better price.

I am running in one of my machines 512X4. Mine is running a whole lot better. Multitasking has became alot better.
 
On an older Socket A build I moved up from a pair of Corsiar 512mb xms series performance dimms into that ezact same 2gb kit of Kingston ValueRam then. Talk about a huge difference noticed immediate then going from 1gb to 2gb your eyes will bulge out when seeing the small dimms there replaced with just a pair of larger dimms also a good idea in general.

Besides Kingston Corsair another great brand as well as others like Crucial, OCZ premium, Patriot(newer name on market) will work. I save the 2gb and moved it onto the next build eventually replacing the Corsair dimms so someone else would have a basic system to use later.

On the present build the 2gb of Kingston Hyper X performance memory above what you need there will be replaced by a pair of 2gb dimms of the same for preparation on 64bit OSs like the next version of Windows when out in beta next year. For the systems you have there take the leap to the larger sized dimms and you won't regret it.
