RAM test?

I just recently put 2 x 512 MB Hyper X sticks of RAM into my computer. At first it felt like it was amazingly faster, yet now it seems just as slow as before. Is there a way to test or see, and make sure that the computer is using the full 1 gig RAM provided?

There are two easy and fast methods. The first is to right click on the MyComputer icon found on the desktop which will also show the user name, make and model cpu, and version of Windows running on the system along with the rounded off total amount of memory. The second and more detailed is seen during the initial post tests when the system is first turned on. With the logo screen disabled the total amount of installed memory detected is counted and displayed.

When the memory is loaded with a number of startups you will notice a slowdown due to not having enough ram available for running programs. To determine if the memory is working properly there are a few stress testers like memtest available. Everest and other benchmark programs will also show the total on memory along with other system information.

id hope your not maxxing out the RAM

I hope I'm not either...but I'd imagine that I'm not since I have the same stuff on my comp as I did when I had my general 512 in before.

As for the memtest advice etc... thanks. I'll try that when I get home.

Oh one more question: You mentioned startups....well, I could disable certain uneccessary start-ups on Win98, but in XP, I can't find the option to do this through the Run menu. Does WinXP have this same startup menu?

Start > Run > msconfig > Startup

That is one the first section to look at for reducing startups. If you have programs that include background services you then go into the services section and put a check mark on the "hide all Microsoft services" box. Then you can look through the items there.
