Ram upgrade did nothing

I just replaced my two 256MB 266MHz PC2100 DDR ram sticks for two 512MB 400MHz PC3200 DDR ram, which also said it was PC2100 combatible. The computer recognizes it but I see no different in performance, if anything, it's a bit slower. What could be wrong?

RAM does not increase performance. It might help with load times, but raw performance is not increased. Upgrading your processor is about all you can do to make a system truly faster.

So why do so many people greatly recommend upgrading your RAM and are always enthusiastic about the huge boost in performance?

It can help but nothing is like upgrading the processor. The biggest thing with more RAM is that it helps reduce the amount of paging your system as to do which makes it seem faster.
