RAM upgrade

Hello folks! I have an old hp laptop which had factory 4gb of ram. It has 2 slots for ram cards. One slot was free. Today to upgrade my RAM amount i put a 2gb of ram card.
I really need help, because after i boot my system, i went to task manager where i found out that my computer reserved 3.1gb of ram for system. Before i put that new card it had 1.1gb reserved for windows function. Can someone help me. I guess i have to do something with bios? Or maybe there is easier option?

Update.
I removed factory card with 4 GBs and running this time on 2 GB card. System reserved 1,1 GB same when i run on 4GB card. Why does system reserve extra 2GB (3.1 GB total) when i have 2 cards 2gb adn 4gb? Why does it reserve only 1.1gb when i run them single 2 or 4

Probably because you are only running a 32bit operating system and a 32 bit OS will only see memory up to 4gb.
