RAM vs dead computer

I have a Toshiba Satellite p25-s507 with two 256 mb chips in it. I got into video stuff so bought a 512 chip to replace one of them. It worked ok for a while but then the computer totally shut down. After having been told several times, the problem was my motherboard, to make a long story short, I eventually replaced the aftermarket chip with the original and the 'pute' all of a sudden booted up fine.

So I bought a couple of 1 gig chips, installed therm, and the machine would no longer boot again. Put the original chips back in and it works. The place I bought the chips from (Staples) did a little diagnostic and didn't find anything seriously wrong but the guy said the computer won't read the new memory.

So does anyone have any idea what gives?

My guess is some motherboards are picky with memory and yours is one of them. I would suggest leaving the original memory module in the slot that it works in and adding a new 512 megabyte or 1 gigabyte PC 2100 (DDR 266) 200-pin module to the second slot. See if it works then.
