RAM: which is better, 1x of 2gb or 2x of 1gb?

my laptop supports 2gb of ram, and has two ram slots. my question is when i upgrade, should i get a 2gb stick, or should i break it up and get 2x 1gb sticks? im wondering what kind of effects it will have as far as transfer speeds. it would seem that if the 2x 1gb were in sort of a raid formation, it could write 1/2 the data to both sticks, making it quicker, just like in raid 0. anyone know how it works?

btw, frys is offering a transcend 2gb stick ddr2-5300 for $40

I will go for 2 x 1GB. Not sure if one RAM slot can take up to 2 GB.

if your computer supports a max of 2GB i doubt that it can support both of them on one slot, so 2x1GB and then you will also have the added benefit of dual channel

Dual channel makes 2 ram sticks work together as one. Kinda like RAID 0...
