RAM? Why such a big deal?

While it does mention defragmenting and such it doesn't say SuperFetch does that. It says that Vista automatically runs defraging and other tasks at a low process priority so that any programs you are trying to run at the same time will get to do their thing first. SuperFetch is a caching system that keeps frequently used programs in memory so they load faster.

The SuperFetch feature preloads the most commonly used into memory for seeing them load faster when going to use them. SuperFetch monitors the system and runs the defrag and Windows Defender at the low priority settings.

It's not either of the two just an automatic maintainence tool that acts like your security guard/janitor cleaning up after you by starting these processes in low key. :P

All, except for one WD model, are under $100, some as low as $59.99.

Black Friday and year end clearance explains the large price drops during the holiday season there. Plus you will now see the WD Green Power 1tb models starting to come down in price as well.

Just think in 1999 a 13gb WD ide model cost $199.95! ! Now you find 500gb sata models for $59.99 as seen there. Nice! :D

But that doesn't stop just with drives but with one other item that always seems to maintain a high price namely memory itself. When the 2gb sized dimms were first seen out a year ago $299.99 for a pair of Hyper X DDR2 800 dimms now seen for $60.99 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104043

SuperFetch is:

"SuperFetch is the memory manager in Windows Vista. It analyzes memory usage patterns over time to determine the optimal memory content for a given user and works continuously to maintain that content at any given date or time of day. This differs from the prefetch technique used in Microsoft Windows XP, which preloads data into memory without analyzing usage patterns.

SuperFetch also automatically recognizes and uses any additional capacity afforded by nonvolatile flash storage devices enhanced for ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive. SuperFetch in effect improves the performance of the storage layer of the computer’s memory."

Running other performance tools is not SuperFetch
