Random Freeze Ups

Hello Guys, I've been experiencing random freeze ups on my build which I made about a year ago. At first it happened, it was the hard drive being faulty so I replaced it with an SSD. Everything worked fine until a month ago and I installed Intel Tool Box and had it fix and optimize everything; seemed to fix the problem because no more random freezes. Now again, I am getting the freezes. I leave my PC on and have a game running like 24/7 but after like 5-6 hours, it just freezes, I can move mouse but can't click on anything or even open task manager. Please help me!

What make, model and wattage of power supply do you have? That could be the issue, or maybe some defective memory. Download Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD, boot off the CD and let the memory test for a good 6-12 hours (just do it overnight perhaps) and see if any of your DIMMs are defective.

What are the specs of your machine?

Look through my other posts, one of them has the specs :) I am being super lazy by not posting them here so I guess I am outshining all of you guys :P

I'm going to be completely lazy and not bother to look through your posts...

Have you downloaded Memtest and tried that?

Could my ram possibly be to blame? I did the windows memory check and everything was fine.

Components:
CPU i7 870
MB ASROCK H55DE3 LGA1156 R
PSU CORSAIR|500W CX500 CMPSU-500CX
DVD BUR SONY OPTIARC | AD-7261S-0B%
MEM 2Gx2|GSKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL
CASE APEX| VORTEX 3620 RTL
EVGA 9500 GT

I wouldn't use the Windows Memory Diagnostics test. It does a very short test and said once all my RAM was fine when actually one stick was defective. I'd download Memtest86 and run the test for around 6 hours to get a good idea of what's going on. :)

I ran memtest overnight and it said "no errors"; so now which direction do I move from here?

I'd say it could be your hard drive. What make/model HDD do you have? Download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool and check your hard drive for errors with that.

I have an intel 80GB SSD which I bought in november. I downloaded their tool box and it says hard disk health is 100% and is running excellent.

So I changed the Ram, I had the MEM 2Gx2|GSKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL and now replaced it with one stick of PNY - Optima 4GB PC3-10666 DDR3 DIMM Desktop Memory. The computer doesn't get stuck no more. I guess that was the issue all along.

P.S. Memtest said my memory had no errors when I ran it overnight so it wasn't fully accurate.

AND...... The problem returns so I'm guessing my ram wasn't to blame at all.

Do you have Ram voltage in motherboard set to auto or a specific voltage? I was wondering if me having it set on auto might be causing this problem. And if its a specific number, what would be a good number? I am new to this so have no clue how voltages work.

I belive this is probably an over heating issue.

Ensure you have all the latest drivers, windows updates, direct x updates, bios, chipset drivers and so on. Update everything.

Then clean out the case ensuring you have no dust.

Remove any overclock or overvolt.

If you still get freezes, does it bluescreen?

If so, (and only after doing all the above), contact john and ask him and he will take you through trouble shooting the bluescreen issues.

It does not blue screen at all. It just freezes and its not even that I am always running highly intensive application that it freezes. Sometimes it will freeze when I alt-tab into firefox. Drivers are all updated and case is clean. I also thought it might be overheating but when it freezes and I am around, I open up bios right away and it states cpu temp 38 C so kind of confused.

Yeah but even the 20 secs between freeze and you getting into the bios can drop a CPU temp by 20degrees if its overheating. Replace thermal paste and see if that helps.
