Random Freezing... going crazy

Hey guys, whenever I am running 3D games, I get random freezing, anywhere from 1 minute to 1 hour into playing. My setup: (EDIT: when my comp freezes, entire system locks up, no keyboard/mouse, the only thing i can do is a hard reboot.)

AMD athlon x2 4200 dual core
Asus A8N-SLI mobo
2 gigs (2 x 1 gig) kingston ram
radeon x1300 (by sapphire)
250 gig western digital 7200 rpm 16 meg cache HD
Colorsit 500W power supply
Thermaltake evil eye case

Things I have tried to fix:

im 99.99999% sure its not overheating, all my temps are under 40 when the freezes happen, also ive felt around in there and nothing is hot.

Tried new and old drivers, both catalyst and omega.

I am thinking its possibly a power supply problem? but 500 W should be plenty... any way to check if my psu is deffective?

im pulling my hair out here, thanks in advance.

Considering the randomness of the failure, I'm thinking you are right in that it isn't a heat-related problem... double-check your video card fan, though, just to make sure.

What is the amperage rating on your power supply? You need at least 16a on the 12v rail, 18a would be better.

Try running memtest86, there's a chance your problem is an iffy memory stick.

After that... there's always a chance of driver conflicts... almost imppossible to isolate when the failure is random as yours.

have already run memtest86 - no errors

on the side of the powersupply it says:

12v: +20A

I dont know if this is a possibility, but to me it seems like i got a lemon card that THINGS its overheating when it actually isnt... any other suggestions?

thanks again :)

Well, it's kind of hard for it to think it's overheating... more likely your temperature-measuring equipment/software isn't up to teh job/measuring in the wrong place.
