Random Lock-Ups

Five days ago my PC randomly locked up (in Windows, general use), I couldn't do anything, no taskmanager or anything. It just freezes and the sound loops. I had to reset and it booted back into Windows.

I went back to a Restore Point from a few days back and it had been working fine...

Then again yesterday, it locked up. This time I was playing GTA and just before it happened I got a load of artifacts. Which I'm guessing is my cards OC, I've been testing them out lately. (I've set them back to stock for the time being).

Here's some Event Viewer screenshots, don't know if anything looks out of place?

Could the freezes be caused by my cards being OC'ed too much?

As fas as I know, it's random. I haven't timed it or anything. I can go a few days without doing it. Although, it's never done it, say, within an hour of me being on the computer.

I've just set my GPU's to stock and un-installed video drivers, ran driver cleaner in safe mode, and install latest (181.20) drivers. In case it was the OC or drivers.

So you have nvidia graphics? I am using a pc with

Q6600
3GB RAM
9800GTX+
750GB 7.2K

I also get random lockups. The sound repeats where it is, and it's happening to me in CoD4, WaW, Far Cry 2 and Crysis. WTF!?!?!? After that, my hard drive cannot be used meaning I have to unplug and restart. Then it happens again (fairly quickly). It has happened once during file copy, so I am awaiting a new hard drive already? Is the graphics card or software a problem too??

I am not using my main, because I was making Far Cry 2 and Crysis maps on this one. That is where most crashes happened. I also tried the standard versions too though (not the editors) and installed the Call of Duty games to test.

I am using Home Premium the same as you are, and have also set all clocks (including processor) back to default. Tried system restore and still nothing?

Is this a coincidence or what?

a friend of mine has had the same problems in GTA4. the root of his problem was a memory write error from the game. try running your game as administrator and see what happens. if it still locks up, memtest.

What are the error codes reading in the Event Viewer? You can open the error codes with the red exclamation points next to them. Post what the error codes are.

For instance they will look something like this:

Error Code:

BCCode : 9c BCP1 : 00000004 BCP2 : 805461F0 BCP3 : B2000000
BCP4 : 00070F0F OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 768_1

I had similar problems using 181.20, reverting back to 180.48 and all was well. THe 181.20 drivers werent playing well with the 9800gtx in a few forums ive seen, not sure if they do the same with your card or not. I also had problems like that when cpu/SPP voltage wasnt high enough.

I've had a lock up while I was in Windows, too.

This is what it gives me when I double click on the Error (05/01/2009 4:52:27PM: Event ID 1101) which is in the first screenshot.

I was using the 181.00 drivers when the lock up where happening. I've just installed the 181.20 drivers and reset my GPUs back to stock.

My system has been stable for a few months now, but I guess it could the be the voltages?

Thanks guys!

I am still having these problems with mine too. Mine seems to be running a little warmer than usual, but I am guessing it is a software problem (but the hard drive also clicks, so it could be that). I'll post back when I get the hard drive replaced on Thursday.

Your system is overclocked? It could be causing crashes if it is. I would bring the clock speed back to near manufacturer specifications and then see how your system runs.

It is, Yeah. Though it's been running just fine for months now. If it happens again, I'll certainly try that. Thanks.
