random question

in these forums it seems everyone has a different opinion of power supplies, but my question is, is there such a thing as too much? i mean if price is no longer a factor, would say a 800W power supply be bad for a system that only needs 500?

if you plan to get a second gpu it's fine, or if you don't plan on replacing for a while, otherwise its fine if you got the money for it.

No not really, read below.

It would be fine. But in general, but not always the case. A power supply, say a quality 800W just pulling low wattage, the efficiency is lower. A 800W pulling 600/700 watts the efficiency is better then it would be if it was pulling like 200/250W.

But other then that you can put a 1000W one on a systems that will never pull more then 250W

so generally its fine, but for the most part its good to get one about what you need as it will be more efficient?

I like having alittle head room. Say if you have a system that pulls 500W max. Look for a quality one in the range 600/650 wattage.

Are you sure? I was reading this review a few days ago:

Yep, it's a crap supply, but it just says something about efficiency. When pulling a large wattage, the efficiency got way lower. Maybe it just does that because it's a really bad supply, though. :P

Yeah, pretty much a piece of junk. Really only a 500W supply and lowend at that. Almost hilarious they are passing it off as a 1050W. Most Diablotek are made by unknown Chinese OEMs.

Yeah, they really suck. :P But the review still makes it look like PSUs are more efficient at lower wattages though, right?

Only that PSU, because it's really only a 500 watter. If you overload a 1000w psu the efficiency goes lower too ;)
