Random shutdown issue...

Lately I have begun to notice that my computer will just decide to power off completely without any notice. I have noticed that this seems to happen when I am downloading a file at a high kb/s. I am wondering if there is some sort of reason as to why it would do this?

No other computer I have ever owned has done this, so something sinister is at work. Mainly it is when I use Azureus to download the files.

Any suggestions on what might cause this?

I have tried limiting the speed to which I am able to download and it still seems to give me the same problem. I currently have a 5mbit down, 1mbit up connection.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+
RAM: 1gb Corsair twin-x

Plenty of hard disk space, etc.

Downloading by itself wouldn't put any great load on the supply while torrents and other types of downloaders grab cpu and memory to some degree. You are most likely seeing a high cpu temp where the overheat protection circuit on the board is kicking in. That shuts a system off totally when a preset or speciified temperature is reached. Have you monitored you temps cpu and system?

No, I have not monitored temps, and aside from seeing them in the bios which would only show me an idle temp, I do not have a temp gauge (sorry the name of the item alludes me).

Unless there is some sort of third party program you could recommend that would allow me to check temps of course. Didn't even take this into consideration as a heat issue being the possible cause of the problem.

I suggest you run a virus scan on your computer. You may have a virus that is causing your problem.

as for a program to monitor you're temps, try speedfan, or pc wizard. PC wizard is a lot easier to understand IMO since Speedfan has always stuffed up on me showing me temps that were in the minuses.

try spyware/virus scans to clean up any infection that might be causing this problem, they also may be causing your system to load up and overheat and crash, as pc wizard said.

Alright, I appreciate the feedback. I do a full system scan and then try using the temp monitors you suggested. It will be so much better when I can pick up all my parts on Friday and build my new system and not have to worry about this problem for the most part anyway. This PC is gonna turn into my mule for downloading and burning.

Perhaps I might just burn all files I want to keep and then do a fresh install of Windows as I haven't done that in over a year, was a good run to say the least.

I got Speedfan to work, and it shows my core temp hovering between 40c-43c and now and then hitting 45c-49c. Temp2 (not sure what this is monitoring, RAM perhaps), anyway it is hitting 52c from time to time when I run something like Adaware for example.

Hard drive temps are 35c-37c, and everything else is quite low. Aside from that I can't really determine if it is a temp issue because I can't seem to get my downloads above 400kbps. No shutdowns though since I posted this thread, so I guess that is good.

With SpeedFan the #1 temp is for the cpu with the #2 temp being the board's. That 52C is hot for a board temp. I ran into a 48C temp when the current board was in the old case with little air flow. That's when the new case along with the much larger cpu cooler and large case fans saw the 48C board suddenly drop to 31C with 46C cpu temp also drop to 33C. Your board is the item there seeing the high temps and resulting in shutdowns.

Ah, well thanks for clearing things up, I had no idea what Temp 1-3 and Core was monitoring.

Temp 1 has been staying at 33C the whole time, so if that is my CPU then that is great. Temp 2 though doesn't want to stay lower then 49C. Perhaps I should take the side panel off my case to hopefully get it cooler.

When the last case saw a foobar the replacement board and cpu alike saw high temps right off due to the confined space and lack of any front intake or side vents to draw in cooler air while heat was thrown out of the rear. The increased air flow with the new case and added fans shows the large contrast in temps. Due to the newer power distribution and 12v cpu feed added for AMD models as well as P4 boards the board run warmer and need more cooled air coming in. Water cooling and even air conditioned cases are often the options used on serious gaming builds. The cooler the interior is the lower the temps are for everything.
