Random shutdowns

I have a gateway t 1620 that recently in the last week has shutdown randomly. It doesn't say its shutting down it just turns off randomly. Sometimes even right when it barely loads the desktop. I uninstalled all recent programs and even completely reinstalled the Vista OS assuming that would fix it.

Lucky me about 30 mins after i turned it on, it turned off. This laptop is supposed to be for college....so this can't be happening  LOL
well thanks for reading

You battery might be going bad, or maybe even the power contacts might be damaged in the laptop. If your computer is still pretty new I would just send it in for repair.

I would guess that it's overheating. Typically they have a fail safe built in that auto shuts them down before they overheat. I've never actually seen one do it so i don't know if it would just shut off like you're saying or if it would shut down gracefully.

That is right, overheating may cause trouble. If it's an AMD this theory is busted (AMD processors self-destruct at overheating destroying the entire motherboard) , but if it's Intel, you should try to clean the processor (maybe it has dust which won't let the air ventilation cool it well)

thanks for the responses, its AMD so i guess not overheating?
well i have noticed that even when plugged in it won't charge sometimes so maybe the contact things? I got this laptop last november...recent enough i hope? lol

LOL not quite true (thanks to OHP)but Intels CAN certainly handle heat much better than their AMD counterparts and usually survive a CPU fan failure. ;)

It's possible that the motherboard or power supply is going out. I know someone who had a gateway notebook that was purchased sometime within the last year, one day it simply wouldn't power on and it turned out that the motherboard had or a part of the motherboard had went out on it. It's possible that there is a short somewhere which would account for the fact that your battery doesn't want to charge and the fact that it shuts off now and then. Is it still under warranty?
