random shutdowns

A chkdsk could help. Not the best, but its fixed issues for me before. And most of the time, you have to restart and it starts before it boots.

Well the toshiba drive is out right now, and it has stopped it as far as I can tell.

[rant]Would be nice if toshiba would get up off their rumps and make a test program that can not only see the drive but actually test it to fix this before it starts screwing up the system. But that would be too much to ask them, just like a reliable board from ASRock, a good drink from pepsi, or a battery cap from minimed that does not strip every 3rd battery. THings that can not happen. :/ [/rant]

I agree with your rant. I had a 775 AsRock board that was terrible quality, problems all around. And I thought they fixed it, but now with your problems, it sounds like a nightmare to work with.

It might be the extreme 4, or the whole company I don't know. But they will not RMA it, and the support people have not yet got back to me. Emailed them many times, and still nothing. I know I will never again use them unless there is absolutely no other choice, which is more than a good chance as they hold a monopoly on floppy boards, and a good hold on 1155 IDE boards. :/

Anyway, as it stands, seems that pulling the toshiba drive fixed the issue. Still got the fans way up to 100 and folding off, but it is no where near hot at all. So should be fine there.

Im a coke man myself. And please do inform me the exact line in the rules that says not liking pepsi is against the rules. I will gladly remove the comment if it is against the rules.

people on here joke way too much. I aught to just shut up and wait for someone to laugh or say its not a joke before i react. I never can tell a joke from a not joke. :/

think about this. The drive is shutting down windows. how am I to repair it, if I cant boot for more than enough time to enter the password and get to the desktop.

I do not think I will try a repair. I will copy all the contents off the drive from a live boot linux and replace it with a 3TB 7200 RPM drive.

you boot from the CD...not windows. hur dur! Believe it or not i was in the same boat you were, it can bandage it, but seriously if you are not relying on it, id just RMA it, i was relying on it cus my boot sectors were getting wiped out. WD Blue died on me during a move, bought a SSD to replace it, been using the SSD to boot from since

I can't RMA a drive that came with a used laptop. And its my fault it is broke. And how was I to know it is bootable. But again, it is not worth it.

okay then, but however keep that utility in mind, it will recover a dying drive, long enough to get it runnin good again, i ended up using it nearly every day for a week till my ssd got here :)

I think I will just use a live boot USB and copy everything over. I can format a 30GB section off to the side of the 1TB drive and fit it all in there. be easier than planning on it lasting or booting.

Probably, Though id just pull it out as soon as possible, the longer its spinning the worse it will get. And dont try the 'stick in a freezer trick' it just makes things worse, if you ever encounter that issue, though you can if you are desperate, just my suggestion would be pull it out, stick it in a antistatic bag, and pull the data off and throw it on something else when you have a perminent or semi-perm location for it. I still have to RMA my WD Blue 500 gig drive x.x maybe next paycheck, but not UPS...god they suck.

I find that most shipping methods do suck. Most of my computer parts sit in greensboro for a day before they get here. USPS, they never update. Fedex now, they tend to get here way early in the morning and generally a day ahead of time. I like them.

anyway, back to topic, It is out. Thats how we determined it was the problem. I don't have a permanent place to put it right now. But I will real soon.

I just may have to ban you for that comment. Thats all I drink is regular pepsi.

Yes, I was just joking. I should have put a sarcastic smiley in there but I didn't.
