hey guys
my computer which was built two years ago has been running into some problems lately. I got a crazy virus that might have killed my hard drive. everytime i turn it on, it would turn off by itself before the windows logo. so i got a new harddrive and reinstalled xp. However, it seems now that everytime i try to install a program it turns off by itself. I have run out of ideas....can anyone give me some suggestions as to how to approach the random shutoffs?? thanx

When was the last time you blew out the inside of the case?
Something could be clogged with dust, causing overheating.

sounds like when your proc is hitting load its shutting its self down... try download HWMonitior... whats your cpu temp?

I've had a problem similar to this, any time i tried to do something that required more CPU usage, the pc would just shut off, in my case it was the PSU, so if everything doesnt work, you may want to try a new PSU

hey guys i've cleaned out my computer tons of times....there shouldnt be any dusts there...as to the CPU temp...it should be fine too but i'll check that out...i guess if anything else it might be my PSU...any other suggestions guys?

hey guys so i really dont know what is going on right now...my computer just shut off for no apparent reason...it wasnt because i was installing a program...also i downloaded HWmonitor and checked...one temperature indicate 34 degrees celsius and another is 90 degrees celsius...which i think is wayy too high but i'm not sure...is there a way i can find out whats causing the shutoff?

Here we go again. Basic troubleshooting calls for stripping the computer down to the basics and then adding back components one at a time until you find the culprit. If the system runs continuously with just a power supply, mainboard, processor and memory, then you know it is something else and you will find it through basic troubleshooting. Good luck.

one temperature indicate 34 degrees celsius and another is 90 degrees celsius...

If that's a legit temp and not a HW read error, my money is on that. If you're able, remove the HSF, clean the base of it and top of the CPU, then re-apply thermal compound and see what your temps are then.
