Raptor Cooling

I just finished my first build.

AMD 3200+
1 gb memory
radeon 9600 pro
A8v deluxe mobo
2x74gb wd raptor (raid 1)

Should I be concered about cooling the system because of the 2 hd. The case currently has 1 large fan (5" for 1500rpm) and the cpu fan at about 4000rpm. Will I have a problem?

Thanks

Do you know what heatsink+fan is on your CPU? Is it the stock one or an aftermarket cooler?

Usually the stock cooler is good enough, providing your room temperature is cool and nothing else in your case is giving off excess heat. However, if yourroom is warm or PC is warm, the stock cooler might not be enough.

Just the stock fan and heatsink on the AMD CPU.

The room is probably about 60-75 through out the year. Is the PC giving off excess heat... I dont know. I do know the hdd's can get pretty hot, but I think they are designed to take more.

So what do you think, can I stay with the 2 stock fans?

If you are running everything at stock speeds, and your ambient temperature is pretty cool, you should be fine.

To make sure, download a program like SpeedFan. It should display your temperatures and let you monitor them. There is a bit of setting up to do with the software, but nothing the Read-me won't be able to show you how to do. I would suggest staying below 50C, if it's higher than that at idle, I would say get a better cooler.

When you say stay below 50C ambient temp, do you mean the mobo temp (i.e. case temp) or the hdd temp? Thanks

Stay below 50C idle temp (meaning, if your PC is jsut sitting there not "working)

Your ambient temps is the same as your room temperature.

Stay below 50C idle temps is referring to the CPU temperature. Your motherboard and HDD temps might not be detectable, but if they are try to keep them ~35C-40C. I'm thinking this is realistic compared to my temps.

Thanks for the clarification.

My CPU and Mobo temps are about 30-37c. Original I had some ATA drives hooked up, and was able to monitor those temps. But when I took them out and install the 2 raptors in RAID on the Promise controller, no more temp info on the hd :( .

So still wondering if the hd will get too hot with out designated cooling. Dont want them to burn out on me to quick. They cost a bundle ;)

Thanks

You can purchase harddrive coolers, but personally I think a 80mm fan mounted to blow air on the mdoes jsut as good if not better. Usually the hdd coolers come with 1 or 2 puny 40mm fans, that don't push much air. It's also cheaper to get an 80mm fan dedicated for the HDD's.

thanks for the info. It really helped.

Would like to put in another fan. 80 mm sounds fine. Saw the 2x40mm, think your right about them. Only problem is not sure if I have space to mount another 80mm fan.
