Newbie here. I never built a computer before, however, I recently replaced my Compaq Desktop computer with my first "assisted" computer build and want to know if my new computer is overkill, average or below average. My signature will describe most if the items I have, what is missing is the following:

My IT Support person says I have an overkill for what I want, which is primarily internet usage, Video/Picture/Document editing and possible gaming. I am not that big on PC games, as I have both the PS3 and Xbox 360. Just wanted to receive your opinions.

Drives
LITE-ON SATA DVD-ROM Drive
LITE-ON SATA 20x DVD+-R DVD Burner w/LightScribe
MITSUMI USB 2.0 Digital Card Reader w/1.44MB 3.5" Floppy

TV Tuner
Hauppauge WINTV-PVR-150-PCI Interface Tuner

The cost was just below $2000 with the rebates. Nothing for the actual build, just time.

Now for the pics:

i'm jealous of ur system....it is DEFINETLY sweet....and who cares wut ur IT guy says....if ur gonna surf the web...surf in STYLE baby!

ur missing an option on ur poll......

****ing Sick lol (sorry for F bomb thought it was appropriate)

You could always overclock it if you really wanted to so you can get those extra few gigaflops of CPU grunt out of it.

It's not an overkill. It's a nice computer mate, i'll give you that. But it's far from an overkill.;)

Building a computer is cool, because for a newbie like myself, working with someone who knows computers and learning words like RAID 0 and what it does and mean, is pretty damn cool. When I asked for a super fast computer he simply stated, " 2 Raptors at RAID 0 ". The dream began and two weeks later...BAM!!

Even though I learned alot, I still do not know everything that is out there. I went with his recommendation(s). Thanks for your feedback.

May I ask besides the GeForce 8800GTX that I could have gone for, which I was told that the difference between that one and the GTS was minimal, compared to the price difference.

I was told that the system would only see 3GB of RAM, even though I went with 4GB. Will upgrade to Vista probably next year, if the industry makes the shift.

Thanks for responding...

I purchased two games for it. My friend who helped me build it, said that he wouldnt talk to me anymore if I didnt buy at least one game for it. So, there I was at Game Stop, purchasing the Zboard, Battlefield 2 (Complete Edition) and Battlefield 2142. Both games, graphic wize and speed of gameplay (never had a lagging problem yet) is absolutely incredible.

X2900XT.:)

EDIT: Nearly forgot the 8800 Ultra.;)

Looks good and isn't that much of an overkill except for the amount of ram and maybe the over rated psu and those pink cables :P

That's it...you crossed the line about my pink cables...:D Just know that I am very secure in my manhood to install such cables. To be honest, they are actually red..it came with with hard drives. The lighting in my kitchen throws off dark colors. If you talk about my cable ties, well those are pink..so you can make fun of me with that selection choice.

It is very much an overkill for someone like me...when all I really use the computer for is the internet...ebay and work emails. I just wanted a fast computer. My IT Support friend assisted in the build..so he went overboard when he realized the budget involved.

Thanks for the response..

By the way, I just took these pictures. I purchased and installed two Thermaltake's iBox'es, 5.25" Drive Bay Accessory Box. They have them at Radio Shack. Sorry for the poor lighting, I had to use my Surefire Flashlight.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is an iBox, it seems like a simple tray.

And your computer is overkill for the use you intend to do with it. I mean, I doubt you are getting the best of your 4gb ram and 8800GTS, but at least you can get any game and it'll play well ;)

Btw are you overclocking it ? With DDR2-800 RAM, its something you should be looking towards doing, but then again that would just add to the overkilling.

I said overkill, only because of the amount of RAM. Nobody truly needs 4GB.

You should try cleaning it up a bit, hiding some of the cables and making it look much cleaner on the inside.

hahaha i can only imagine the speed on that computer. you're the man for getting four gigs haha. i wish i could try that XD

The iBox is exactly as you described. It can store your memory cards, tools, cds, etc. I was told that the computer doesn't fully use 3GBs to run, so definitely overkill. From my pictures, I do have Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142. I really do not have the words to describe the graphic and game play.

I am not overclocking at the moment. For my internet usage, I blink and the page is up.

I used this website to check my upload/download speed....
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

My results are:

Download Speed: 26084 kbps (3255.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 3217 kbps (394.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Just curious, what is the ideal speed for download and upload??
