It depends what you want to do with it.

I'd get a graphics card, and a dvd burner or dvd-rom/cd burner, but thats just becuase i like to play games, and some games come in dvd format like the UT2004 dvd edition.

but, if you don't play many games, maybe just get a bigger hard drive, and a cd burner

I have a lite-on CD buner and a lite-on dual layer DVD buner. I didn't build the computer and I didn't realize I only had a 40 gig hard drive. Are hard drives expensive?

Harddrives can be expensive, if u get like a 400GB one lol. An 80GB can be had for $60 or less on sale (rebates and such.) But i dont even use 30GB out of my 80GB drive and ive had this PC for a long while lol, u might not need a bigger one.

Are you wantign to game? Bigest improvement would probably be a new video card.

What would be a good video card? I plan on gettng an LCD monitor someday... does that matter? I do watch TV on my computer, but I don't play any games.

Well then you dont need a high end graphic card really.

No, I'd rather spend that money elsewhere. My question is would I need to upgrade it to go to an LCD digital monitor?

If I did upgrade my HD, how would I back everything up?

if you bought a new HD you dont need to remove your original, you can use both. In that way you dont need to back up, you might want to install your OS on your nice new big HD or you could install the new HD as a slave to the old one and then you wouldnt have to do anything really in the back up department.
no there is no reason that you have to get a LCD monitor its completly up to you.
your computer looks pretty good the only thing i would upgrade would be the hard drive.

It runs really nice and It's defintely fast enough. I know I don't need an LCD, but I'm a geek. I'm going back to school, so that's while down the road. I definitely plan on upgrading the HD, though. I will be saving a lot of stuff on it for school.

How do I tell how much I have used on my current HD?

Richg-click Start > Explore > Right-click Harddrive (usually "C:/") > Properties

should be a little pie chart with used and unused.

when i got my second hardrive it came with software that transfered everything on my old hd to my new one

im thinking about getting an LCD too bc when i goto school ill be living in a dorm which is very small! haha not alot of desk space...

I basically want a nice system that I can continue to upgrade without having to completely overhaul it or buy an entirely new system.

On my list of upgrades so far is:

120 gig hard drive - how do I know how much cache I should get and what type of interface??

New case for better vetilation(I just ordered a new heatsink and case fans.)

Maybe video/sound cards.

LCD monitor.

as i take it for a hard drive the bigger the cache the better but you dont have to buy the hard drive with the biggest cache you can find get one with a good amount of space too, i use IDE but i dont think it really matters at all. maybe eventually everything will be SATA i dont kno...

Ok, I have 11.8 gb of space left. That's not a lot, is it?
