Am new to the forums, so if there's a thread/forum for this, kindly direct me.

Recently got a 250-400 dollar budget to build a machine (Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, and Speakers I already have). Here's what I've got so far:

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ "Barton", 333 FSB, 512K Cache Processor - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-381&depa=0&manufactory=BROWSE

ASUS "A7V600-X" KT600 Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-486&depa=0&manufactory=BROWSE

OCZ Enhanced Latency Serices 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-835&depa=0&manufactory=BROWSE

CODEGEN Black/Silver ATX Mid Tower Case With 350W Power Supply, Model "CAT-4062-CA" -RETAIL
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=11-182-557&depa=0&manufactory=BROWSE

Might get a better case, but it's a budget machine.

Total Cost: $344.00

Any opinions?

Is the board good enough to justify such a downgrade to processor? I've read good reviews about the 3000+ XP, and had my hopes set on it. The board is ASUS, a well-known brand (At least where I'm from), and the chipset dosn't seem especially old.

compared to the NF2 Ultra400, that chipset is the dark ages lol. Via doesnt make very good chipsets for overclockin g, even the KT-800 is pretty low on the overclocking charts. i think the only chipset to be considered is the nf2 400. the procesor (2600+) is a mobile, it runs cooler, is a barton (512K L2 cache) and will get you to 2.4-2.6ghz on a NF7-S mobo...i dont think thats possible with a XP3000+ unless ou have water cooling or better.

I actually hadn't planned on OC'ing, as this is my first build, and I really wouldn't know what I was doing.
