Re-Formatting help

Well my dad has a major problem with his computer, He cant get into pretty much anything, if he tries to open things like: my computer, documents, control panel, pictures, videos ect... He gets a pop-up that says "Class Not Registered"

And any other programs he tries to open he gets another pop up saying "The application failed to initialize properly(0xc00000005). Click OK to terminate the application." Then gets another one that says things like "Spy Sweeper Client Executable has stoped working, windows can check online for a solution to the problem next time you go online." Then gives you 2 options, 1. check online for a solution later and close the program. 2. close the program.

He cant acces the internet either. So basically it has locked him out of just about everything. System restores dont work either. And he isnt able to DL anything onto it.

So I have been told that the only other thing to do is re-format. Which will really suck because 1. ive never done it before, and 2. he has 2 HDDs and im not sure which one has the problem :(

So, does anybody have any other ideas? What should I do? Do I really need to re-format or is there some easier way to fix it?

If I do need to reformat, how do I do it?

hmmmm how about START>RUN>type "sfc /scannow" (no quotes) and insert your OS disk when prompted, this will replace any missing system files that have become corrupted in the OS :) you may well need to reinstall updates when completed ;)
 
There is no repair option on the OS disk
Please also note this is a Dell :o

and i tried doing the sfc /scannow and it never gave me a prompt. And when i press install, it gives me another error then closes :(
 
try it in safe mode maybe? really bud.. i'm clutching at straws here !!

anyone else want to jump in ?
 
I did it in safe mode, it does a scan, but again, never prompts me for the disk...So I just put it in..But it wont open :(

Ive been clutching at straws for a long time now :P
I dont know what to do with this thing anymore...
 
I hate to say this(because it's the one everybody says) but this could be due to malware infections.

boot in safe mode and run a virus scan with a good AV .
Ideally- remove the HDD and plug it up as a slave on another pc and run virus scan , this way it will prevent any EXE files from initiating and will make infections much easier to remove ;)
 
will it recognise and open a usb flash drive and have you got one ?

You can use the pc you are on now to install a virus scanner to the flash drive and then plug it into the pc in question to perform a scan ;)

I'm trying to save you having to reformat but I'm running out of ideas bud and it's 2:50 AM here ;):eek:

IT'S WORKING!!!!
WOOOOOO!!

Thank you so much sg1, turns out that command you had me put into run actually did work after it did the scan. I had turned off the computer after that because I was frustrated an done with it. Then started it back up a while ago to try putting in the thumb drive with the viral scan on it, and the pop ups didnt come up, and i was able to get into everything!

IF YOU RUN XP

run nlite on your dell disk

extarct your disk and select only to modify the "unnatended install" page - it will warn you that settings are already present. Click ok.

Change the combo box that says "hide pages" to "prompt repair"

now you can repair with your dell disk.
