Reading Incorrect HD Capacity (Win XP Dell)

Greetings All,

...It was time to reformat but, decided to obtain a new 1TB sata hard drive for my dell desktop which originally had 1 80gb hd and 1 40gb hd....Running fresh install of win xp pro, plenty of ram, 3.2ghz processor.

.....I installed the hard drive however, for some reason, it does NOT show the correct hard drive capacity. The general reading I have thus far done on the web didn't help me much. Bios has latest dell date to it.

.....The hd is/has NTSF format only showing 128 gb capacity. Somewhere i read that i have to have sp2/sp3 installed for it to read correctly. I have seen in various sections in this computer (disc mgmnt?) the hard drive reading correctly but, not in "My Computer".

.....Anyone had similar issues such as this?

The issue is most likely because you are using an original version of XP without any service packs applied. Correct? I believe sp1 had the lba setting included. I would actually slipstream sp3 into a new xp install cd so you won't have this issue again.

...thanks for the reply. I was just coming back to this when you replied. I just did a bit of further reading and it appears that it very well could be an sp2/3 issue. You may very well be right. I have downloaded and save sp1,2,3 someplace here so, I'll have to dig it up and see how i make out. I tried slip-streaming a long time ago and got totally confused and gave up on the issue....Will get back to this sometime in the morning.
