ready to buy a desktop but many questions

I am just starting out to investigate what I need in a desktop computer. So I guess what I have to ask first is what am I going to use it for. Well, the internet of course, and watch movies, and write letters. I am not into games so I guess the extra memory(or whatever) that games requires I won't need. I can't think of anything else but maybe some suggestions will help. So how much do people think I should have to spend to get a basic desktop comuter?

I considered a laptop but I don't think that it would fit into my lifestyle. What would bother me about a laptop is that I would have to carry it where-ever I go. I couldn't leave it in my car because it would get too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. Anyway, there are computers in librarys and other places that I can use when I'm not at home. Maybe some people have some ideas to add to that.

look for one with a smaller hard drive to keep costs down and 2-3 gb of ram would be more than enough for your needs. A combo package with a decent monitor, keyboard and mouse could be purchased for around 600-800 but probably even cheaper than that if you look around.

(why is it that every pre-built computer I see comes with 500gb hdd or bigger???)

You get eMachines T5274 Desktop with 19" LCD Monitor, Printer, Cable & Surge Protector for 580... and that's best buy... I find their prices high in most cases.

Well how do you feel about doing a computer build, building the computer yourself??

It's not to hard, and it is fun :P.

If you build yourself, you will save a lot of $$$$.

What is your budget, this will be for a desktop computer.....

As for a laptop, you don't have to take it everywhere you go. If you left it in the car, as long as no one can see it (hide it under the set) then you should be fine, it will be fine in the summer as well as the winter.

I'm sure you could build a good computer to meet your needs for 300$ (not including monitor, keyboard, mouse, or speakers) all the extras will run you probably 100-200$ more

I neither have the confidence nor the will to build one myself.

^^ Your not going to get something (Prebuilt) with good graphics for that price anyways. So, stop looking. Or save up and buy a Prebuilt and drop in a new psu and an 8600gt. Thats what I did and my pc is running great.

what is cs? and what is fps? and what is gt? and what is two 512 sticks of ram and how do I take it out and put in 2gb stick? thanks

FPS stands for frames per second. From my understanding it is how many frames per second the video card can send to the monitor (if the monitor is a technology that is able to produce what the video card is sending it). When he stated 8600 GT it is a type of video card.

Here is an example of what he was talking about:

Brand of video card: MSI
Model: NX8600GT-T2D512E OC GeForce 8600 GT
Memory of Video card: 512 megabytes
Type of slot on motherboard it is compatible with: PCI Express x16

Here is a short 3.5 minute video that explains the very basics of a computer. In it he shows how to insert a random access memory module into a RAM slot. You need to scroll down to the middle of the web page to find the place where the video is posted.
