Realisticly, when will prices drop?

I have a tough decision to make. I really want to go all out on my computer, but available funds are preventing that from happening. What I really wanted to do evetually was to get an AMD X2 processor. I'm debating if I should do it now, or later. If I do it later, I'd probably go with a 3200+ now, and just wait for a price drop on the X2 3800+. Realisticly, when can we expect a price drop? How long have those processors been out? I don't want to pay $300+ for it now, and have it drop to $200 in a couple of months.

And on a side opinion, for gaming purposes, would I be better off with a X2 3800+ and a lower end video card, like a 6600GT or with a 3200+ and a 7800GT. The rig will mainly be used for gaming, uploading and editing photos, and basic internet use.

thanks mucho

An X2 won't give you considerably more performance for a gaming based computer, you're better off with a Venice 3200+ and overclocking it if you want. X2's are multi-tasking oriented, and that's really where they are stong.

I'd say go for a 3200+ and a 7800GT, that will be FAR better for gaming than an X2 and a 6600GT, simply because the video card is the main focus with gaming, and not so much the processor. If you can, look into an Opteron, you can get a Opteron s929 144 for the same price as a 3000+ Venice I believe, and I personally think that's a far better deal. a 146 would be good 2, if u can go for $210 on a CPU.

Yeah, I've just been doing some reading about dual core, and at this point, it doesn't seem like I'll benefit much from it yet, so I'm going to stick with a single core. I think I'm going to make a jump up to a 3500+, and go with a 6800GS video card. I'd go with the 7800GT, but I still need to buy RAM as well, so I'll need the extra cash. The 3500+ is around $200, is that pretty much the best deal for a $200 CPU? But for only $30 more, I can step up to the 3700+, would there be a noticeable difference? The 3500+ Venice vs the 3700+ San Diego. A $30 upgrade won't exactly kill me, as long as it's worth it

I'd go for the SanDiego, 2X the L2 cache (1MB). However Opterons are jsut relabeled SanDiego's, look at them, same exact specs almost, they jsut tend to overclock better.

I think all the new X2s will be out December 06? So it'll be a while. I forgot the dates but its not soon. I think the FX59 comes out Jan 06, that'll own.

It'll own your wallet for sure, I could build 2-3 nice computers for the price they want for it i bet.

Decided on the 3700+ after much research. Now trying to see which Vid card I can afford. Most likely a 6800GS, and later either another 6800gs for SLi or a 7800gt, if the prices have dropped

ye its the sam thing here im doinng the exact thing as rockfnbttm buying the same stuff i recorn soon everything should drop

for your side note, gaming alone you're better with the better graphics card, but for anything else you'll want the faster processor

umm... get the 3800+ and overclock it. games are going to be much better as multithreaded apps soon. also, i enjoy other music during games. if you do too then a dual core processor is right for you!
SOME games already are slightly multithreaded!
