Realizing framerates....

So, for xmas i got me a 7800GS (AGP) card and I want to test the framerates for various games at different settings. Is there a decent program (free preferably) that runs in the background and measures average fps and other variables while I play a game? Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. - GO GATORS!!!!!!!!

Yes FRAPS can do it.

You go to the "FPS" tab, note the benchmarking hotkey (F11), and then on the bottom under save detailed stats, check MinMaxAvg.

This will record in a spreadsheet the minimum, maximum, and average framerate during the time that you recorded.

If you just want an average without having extra stuff running in the background(not like FRAPS would affect you that much...) Many games offer FPS counters. Just do a little research for the normally pretty obvious console command ;)

Usually in-game based FPS displays only the current FPS, not the average. However I know that Call of Duty 2 displays the average, but I believe the majority of them just show you the current FPS.

Although FRAPS is not free only in the trail edition, which too badly limited in my view, you can properly hunt around for a unlocked version if your lucky

I believe that the only thing limited in the trial version is that you can only record 30-second videos, and that they are watermarked. I know you can use it to monitor your FPS and take screenshots, but I also believe you can use it to record the average FPS as well.

And talking about illegally unlocking it is against the rules :)

Yeah, I've used FRAPs in the past and the only limitation I found was the movie function. Just the FPS counter was free. Now...I don't know about the benchmarking feature or anything like that, but just remember the higher and lowest numbers and get the average :P
