ok, well i got an oldish computer from my friend with 256 megs ram and Pentium 4. It has xp, i tried dualbooting with ubuntu. so when i was installing ubuntu i left for a while and came back the computer was off. i turned it on, ubuntu popped up and said that i should take out the cd. so i did and it turned off. I turned on the computer again and turns out that ubuntu didn't install. whatever, ill just use xp i thought. so i was using the xp when i left and then i came back to the computer going through bios then to loading screen, midway it would reboot and do the same thing. Now i can't boot. I changed the boot order to only HDD and it still didn't work. I took out the motherboard battery for a couple seconds and it didnt work. Then i tried booting in safe mode. no luck. I took out the battery and will leave it like that for the rest of the night and try it in the morning. What do you think i should do. I hope ubuntu didn't do this. and i really hope i didn't break the HDD. So what should i do??

well ain't this a familiar senario...
to correct my oops in this manner i used my knoppix live cd that runs off the cdrom
retrieved my documents, photos etc.....sent them to my external.
then formatted my hdd.

then i split the hdd c:\window d:\fedora C2
installed windows XP first
then fedora linux afterwards
i can choose what to run from the bootloader menu when i booted up the pc.

and rule #1 don't walk away when installing a o/s
rule #2 learn rule #1.

why rule #1 ? because you can catch anything wrong b4 it goes wrong.:)

edit: does it give you an error message ? if so what is it??

one time it said keyboard failure or something like that. and i can't even boot into safe mode. it does the same rebooting thing. but i dont think it is because of the failed linux install. because i was using the computer after the failed install and it worked fine. next thing i know its shutting down, rebooting, shutting down, rebooting. there aren't any needed files on there since this was a friends comp. so i just reinstall the OS? i hope it works though. could have linux fu*ked up my hard drive? i highly doubt it because i set it to make a partition, but when i checked the computer after the failed install it only showed one HDD with the full 40 gigs. and not the 20/20 i set linux to partition. argggggg.

na pamoiky etot pentium 4.

нормальна для обычного компьютера. у меня есть ешо один компьютер. я проста хочу этот починить.а то жалка. пусть по живет.

well have you checked all the parts on the computer? audio/video/ram etc?
sounds like something else is causing the computer trouble booting up.

and far as using the same hdd for both os's mite be causing trouble for you.

if it was me i would troubleshoot all the cards, onboards, cpu psu etc
rule them out or replace what i need to, then use 2 hdds'
hdd1 set to MA.(master) with windows
hdd2 set to SL. (slave) with linux

if this don't work. something is defenitly afoot on the motherboard if it keeps rebooting on you.
have you checked your paste between the cpu and heatsink? see if that's not touching eachother and shorting out? (just a thought)

i don't think so because the computer was in working condition. After a failed install of linux, xp worked fine. After i rebooted it stopped working. So i think i might try to format and install XP again because it seems strange that parts would fail after a failed OS install. I think what is causing this is that i set Ubuntu installed to make partition on the HDD. when i looked on XP there was only one drive showing up. So maybe Ubuntu partially made a partition then stopped and may be causing problems for xp. what do you think?

i can agree to that.
i for one never recommend linux and windows on same drive just for this reason
but it can be that during the install it touched on the xp partition and messed things up

so will everything be alright if i pop in a xp disk and reformat?
