Hi, i have came into some surplus cash and i want to buy a graphics card, the one i have been using was able to run the newest games on low quality up untill a while ago, now it just cant handle the newer ones. i know very little about graphics cards. i can spend up to 350 euros (dollar 495.25, pound 243.77).

i want something reliable that will play the latest game (on high res) and wont become obsolete for a while, i know there are direct x 10 cards now, does that mean theres no point buying a direct x 9 card now? i own a hp pavillion desktop with 1gb ram, 200hdd, 3.2 dualcore processor(i think).

Any advice would be very helpfull, thanks.

495.25 will get you a really decent graphics card. You should be able to get an 8800GTX if you know where to look. What do you mean by Dual core? Do you have a Core 2 Duo processor or the Pentium D variety? Your computer should be enough for an 8800GTX, but it really depends on your PSU, since your computer is prebuilt, you might not have a really powerful PSU.

Yeah you are right DX10 is the future now, I don't think its worthwhile to splash out on a DX9 card at this point.

is the gtx direct x 10? my original psu melted after a power surge and i had it replaced by a repair man who suppied me with a new one, so im not sure if the one he put in is good or not and the pc is at my other house so i cant check atm. but you think the gtx is prob my best bet if my psu can handle it? yea i think its one of those duo core things but i cant be sure.

i didnt really understand any of that tommy. you think its prob a pentium d, your prob right, im not sure really but i think the cpu i have is pretty good anyway.

Depending on how good your P/S is, a 8800GTS or GTX and yes there DirectX 10. Dont know the model of HP you have, just make sure you have PCIe 16 instead of a AGP slot

sorry! lol. Erm you said you had a 3.2ghz dualcore processor, then you were asked if it was core duo or pentium D. It is pentium D, 8800GTX would still work if your powersupply is powerful enough, doubt it is though. Maybe a cheaper graphics card and also a new power supply

well i have more money, 350euros was just my limit for the card, psu's are generally pretty cheap right? so i could get a new one if it ment i got a much better graphics card

yeh they are like 90 dollars maybe for a decent enough one, still get a good graphics card with whats left over. 8800gts 640mb version

The 8800GTX is definitely the best card to get at the moment, and with the 9 series just around the corner it will put downward pressure on price as well.

I found that the gtx is a fair bit more expensive here than america (fricking irish economy) so im gona get a new psu and go for the gts instead, thanks for the advice guys, i prob would have bought some peice of crap without all your help.
