Really Stumped

Hi, I have an Emachine T5254 running Vista about a year old. During the night it shut down, and when I try to restart, it shuts down as Windows is beginning to load. I have switched hard drives to one running XP, changed the power supply, tried removing one RAM stick at a time and swapping their positions. All with the same result. It will stay on all day if I'm in the boot menu. The original HD with Vista runs fine in another case. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean the HD with vista runs fine in another case. It shouldn't... unless both mobo's are exactly the sam (at least that's what my computer teacher said...) Anyways, does it get a quick blue screen? I believe if you press F8... there should be an option... Restart on system failure... you wanna disable that. And see if it gives you a written error.

Sounds like you've taken hard drives out of systems and put them in yours. It don't work like that. The hardware on the motherboard is all different from the original to yours. Thats the reason why its shutting down on you.

Thanks for the replies. I took the hard drive out of the emachine and installed it in an HP Pavilion 1310n. Basically, I just swapped the HDs between cases. After swapping Vista loads fine in the 1310. I'm online with it. But I get the same problem out of the emachine with both HDs. There's no blue screen on shutdown. It dies like pulling the power cord.
