really stupid question here.. can i have 2 cpu's?

i'm a dope, i know nothing. is it at all possible to have let's say a 2.8g cpu... get another 3.2.. and somehow end up with 6 gigs of cpu power?


you can combine AMD and intel's right? depends on the board?

The only boards that see more then one cpu are older server boards were two identical cpus were used for task mastering on network servers and the recent AMD substitute for a quad core type board where two FX-74 dual core cpus could be seen on that type of socket.

You can't mix Intel and AMD on any one board or even diferent socket types by one brand since that easily involve totally different chipsets as well as other factors. People have even tried syncing two separate cases together to combine processing power there to no avail.
 
hm. that's too bad... that'd open up a whole new world wouldn't it if ya could combine processors... ah well it was worth a shot
 
One of the ideas with older server boards seeing two instead of one cpu was for handling multitasking better since those were only single core cpu seen at that time. For work horse as well as server builds the AMD Opterons were the Socket 939 and 940 cpus while quad core models now seen for both Intel and AMD are looked at for capabilities seen with those over the dual core models.
 
You can combine CPU's on AMD 4X4 and Intel Skull Trail motherboards. Those, however, are VERY expensive and only works with certain CPUs (certainly you cannot use Intel with Amd and vice versa).
 
You would have to get a new motherboard to do it but it would be really cool if you could do it. But it is easier to buy a new CPU.
 
As has been said, the Intel Skulltrail is the latest of these boards. It is, however, designed for extreme enthusiasts and is prohibitively expensive. It also has FOUR 16x PCI-E slots so you can install FOUR graphics cards in quad SLI or Crossfire. As has also been said, it only takes a certain type of CPU, which happens to be the LGA771 socket - not exactly mainstream, as the most common application for this socket would be the awesome Intel Xeon processors. This would mean you could have 2 quad core CPUs on one board - OCTOCORE FTFW!
 
S771 is ONLY for Xeons. Xeons are the only current mainstream MP Intel processors. You can't just throw any old CPU with another one and hope to hell they work together. They have to be designed for it.

I didn't expect PC eye to know anything about servers. The guy doesn't know anything about regular PCs, and servers are a unique breed.

Supermicro sells an awesome quad 7000 series Xeon server right now. mmmmmmmm. Dual Xeons are unbelievably common in the corporate sector, as are dual Opterons. I have two dual Xeon servers online here.
