The motherboard I want to get has Realtek ALC888 on-board sound, I was just wondering if this is decent (this is a gaming computer) or if I need to get something a little better (if so, what?)
The audion will be decent and is quite good. A few of games utilize varying versions of EAX and you would need a Creative sound card for that.
Ultimately the choice should be made by you. If the sound is good enough and sounds good to you that should be all that matters since you're the one that will be using it.
I guess I dont get excited by sound cards at all. As long it puts out sound I am happy. I have a Sound Blaster Live! on mine. Then its hooked into a 6 channel mixer then to my stereo. I have 12 band eq and a 12db bass enhancer and 1000 watts. So the sound card doesnt have to be high end for me to get a good sound.
Hate to bump an old thread, but I thought I might as well post here instead of making a new one, as my question is about the ALC888's capabilities. Does it support recording at 24-bit/96k? I haven't gotten a clear answer to this question when doing searches, usually it's either about playback or S/PDIF input and output. I'm probably going to test it but I don't like messing around with drivers unless I have a reason to, so I'd like to get confirmation whether it supports it or not.
