Rear USB works, front USB doesn't anymore

I have a Dynex ATX mid tower with a L4VXA2 motherboard. I had the front USB working (hooked up to PalmOne) with no problems. Not sure if I did anything but the front ones don't work and the rear ones work fine. In the right bottom of the screen, it does say something about unknown device. In the Device Manager, there was a yellow symbol next to where it said USB. I think it was USB host controler or something like that. I deleted it thinking that I would just reinstall it. But if that was messed up, why would the rear USB still work? I tried reinstalling USB 2.0 from the motherboard manufacurers website but that didn't work, just brought up a bunch of stuff that I didn't know what it was. No where was anything to open up and load a file.
 
My guess is the front USB headers became damaged or one or more pins became un-attached.
 
I've inspected the wires both on the front panel and where they plug into the motherboard and dont' see any visual problems. I'm pretty sure I messed something u[ in the device manager. In the Device Manager, there is a Yellow Symbol next to what says Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
 
Do I need to reload Windows, do something in the BIOS, update BIOS or do I need to change something in Windows or give up?

Sorry Aaron, I wish I could help but I'm not really sure. Sometimes USB drives just kind of die, I've had that problem before. If you're sure all of the cables are still connected properly to your motherboard, let me know what you think you may have done in device manager to cause a problem.
 
Your Southbridge likely has two or more USB controllers in it, one for the front connections, and another for the rear.

I'm thinking the controller for the front connections has failed, for some reason. Depending on your setup, there may be another set of connections on the motherboard you can move your front panel USB to, but it would be a newer, high-end board that would have that.

If you have an Intel chipset, then it may be a medium to high current load on the USB killed the controller.

You can use a powered USB hub to replicate the ports in the back, or you could install an add-on card for more USB capability.
