Ok, So... After several hours (close to 10 hours) of searching, and calling several builders (HP, Asus, Compaq, Asus, Asus again.) I have determined that the Mobo in my HP (that is fried) is a Asus p4sd mATX board. It measures 9.6" by 9.6".
Going off of this, I have figured out that I can get a mATX board and replace the p4sd that is in it. I have found one that I like. what are your opinions of this board?? I'm looking for a semi reliable unit until I build a New dedicated rig.

(Also listing CPU and Ram with possible upgrade paths)

Ram upgrades are to be 1 stick at a time until the 8GB is reached.
 
My only concern is that Hp used standard case and usb cables going to their board. Sometimes they use propreitary connections and if you buy a non oem board you will have issues connecting the case connections to the motherboard.
 
he front connections (only ones not directly connected to the mobo) are the sound (don't work b/c of the after-market sound card) power button (any way to get a standardised replacement ??) and 2 USB2.0 (replacement with a 3.5 card reader w/ USB 2.0). So... The only cable be with the Power switch. Is it possible to buy just the switch??

I really want to keep this case as I have done some custom paint work on it and it has a good design to work with.
 
You'll probably run into a problem with Microsoft, since the OEM license doesn't let you transfer Windows to another computer. It identifies the motherboard as the computer.

However, if you call them up and tell them your motherboard died and you replaced it, they'll often just reactivate your key on the new mobo.
 
Last chance hope and inspiration from my truck. (had a ground issue to the Block Heater). Pulled the Dead Mobo, sanded the area that the Mobo mount touches the case, reinstall, and it fired right up (guessing that it was a ground issue with the mount plate that threw a main fail code.
Anyway, still planning on a build, just not with this case now.
