i noticed firefox has many limitations in video watching in linux., what are some major plugins for it. Is installing/uninstalling, and making mistakes in the commad prompt clutter the registry and if so, what is a good reg cleaner for linux. Do i need virus/spyware/firewall for linux, ive been reading around, and some people say yes (wikipedia) and most say no. Thanks for any suggestions

For the most part, virus and spyware is not an issue with Linux, as most people have Windows, so hackers and other such people target windows. There is the occasional Linux virus, but it is extremely rare.

and as far as the video goes, you just need the firefox plugin.

I don't know what version of Linux you're using, but it'll barely make a difference as all Linuxes I know of are very secure. I'm using Ubuntu Hardy (the latest version) which is the most secure Ubuntu release and I've had no security issues with it (I didn't have any issues with Gutsy, Feisty, or any other Linux distro I've used.) So, in my opinion you shouldn't bother with anti-virus or anti-spyware. I've used Linux for 3 years without ANY security issues.

As far as FF video goes: for stuff like youtube vids you have to get the adobe flash player plugin. To get it (assuming you're using Ubuntu) just:

1. Go to http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

2. Make sure ".tar.gz for Linux" is selected and click the "Agree and install now" button.

3. Go to your desktop, right click on the file called "install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz" and click "Extract here"

4. Now open up a terminal by clicking "Applications > Accesories > Terminal" (I know you don't want to, but trust me... it's easy) :) now enter:

Code:
cd Desktop/install_flash_player_9_linux/

into the terminal to change to the flash installation folder.

5. Now enter:

Code:
sh flashplayer-installer

into the terminal.

Follow the instructions... the installer will tell you to press Enter to install... when it says to, do it.

6. When asked to close browser windows, close all FF windows. It'll then ask "Proceed with the installation?" type "y" and press enter.

It'll install and then you can exit the terminal and start FF. That wasn't so bad, was it? :)
