reccomended minimum size of win2000pro partition

i am running winxphome at mo and would like to also put 2000pro onto same hard drive so my partner can play her non xp compatable games on it. what would be the best amount to split the 80gb drive by? 50/30, 40/40, 20/60(i have a second internal drive for all my files i use everyday)

I run both 2000 and XP and dont know of any games that will install on 2000 but not XP. There basically the same, Xp has more eye candy and some more security features

that's what I always thought, maybe she meant it's a win 98 game, in which case how much hard drive space would i need for that? i would have thought 5 gig would be enough for win98se.

I use Win2K Professional on a 40 Gig Patition of my slowly shrinking 120 Gig.:D Another computer I use sometimes has XP Home Edition running on a 40 Gig. It's a Compaq  and runs quite slow, so I would suggest 50(XP)/30(2K).

That would be plenty for 98, but make its big enough partition for the games and what every else you want to install on it.

dont ya just hate when that happens? lol every day i look at my hd space and wonder, "didnt i have 50MB more yesterday????? NOW WHAT HAPPENED?????"

:D

The real nice thing about having a custom build is deciding what OSs you want to put onto it as well as the hardwares you put into it! :D

The first thing to do is remember that the older version of Windows(2000) will have to go onto the first primary since XP is the upgrade to the older version you intend to run. The XP mbr will take over by default where you then edit the boot.ini file to decide which version will be the default OS loaded with the option to boot the older 2000 installation.

If that is going to 98 or 2K you will need a good 20-30gb to allow for that OS's version of the paging file for virtual memory as well as the room for wnatever games will be installed. XP will have the largest second primary for the main OS on the single drive. For a quick install of 98 or 2K on the second drive to avoid any problems and hassles of reinstalling XP all pver again you would use a partitioning tool like GParted to somewhat shrink the current partition and move it to the rear of the drive for a small primary Fat32 or NTFS.

There you may have use the F8 boot menu option if available to load from that drive by selecting it from the lists of drives or go into the bios to temporarily assign that drive as first in the boot order. Always fun doing it the old way there.

Where would you be without CF? I would hate to imagine! ! :P This is the best place to look for working solutions. :D

It depends on just how many programs besides the OS are planned. The software installations themselves along with any files created by them will easily soak up drive space. The newer games and other softwares are another thing to look at since they are larger then the old Fat and 2000 items. Don't forget the need for virtual memory when running any larger programs that need memory.

and don't forget that you don't actually NEED all that extra space. like i said, i ran both on a 7gb hard drive. i coulden't download anything, and most of the time the hard drive was almost full, so i always had to delete junk/old games that were on it if i ever wanted to install a new game. but, it ran fine.

also, theres no reason that games etc coulden't be installed on a partition/drive seperate from the os itself. leaving the os being the only thing on that 5 or 7gb hard drive. i know of quite a few people who put the OS on its own 5gb partition and use a seperate partition/drive for all there programs etc. if he's making a partition for the win2k os, then he obviously has other partitions he can use for the programs he wants for it.

i was going to stick the two OS on an 80gb drive anyway so even split 50/50 i would have about 36gb free for stuff on each OS plus my other 80gb drive which i use to run all my files for XP anyway.

After looking over a llllllongggg list of forums and seeing what topics were seen and the attitudes with admins and mods as well as regular members I came across a great forum here compared to the negative attitudes elsewhere. Generally if someone doesn't have an immediate answer someone else will jump in and offer their own help. That's when you know the forum is a good place to be!

CF is great. Everyone seems to be pretty helpful. I've seen plenty of forums that where not very good at all. This is the best I've run into.

I was running XP on the first 250gb drive used here along with 98 and Linux on the last build. Even thougn 98 and Linus were the two main OSs seen there the front end of the drive had another small partition for MS Dos 6.22 installed from a floppy disk set and 3.1 to run old dos programs and try out a few tools like NT4Dos. While Linux worked as the second OS there the old Fat type OSs became obsolete with DOSBox used to create a virtual dos environement on XP the far newer version of Windows there.

It soon reached a point where 98 was replaced with other smaller distros. I could run the old stuff on XP. Unfortunately the old 120gb there was needed elsewhere at the same time the second 250gb was ordered. That became the XP backup drive and additional storage space. Now two larger sata drives will backup XP and Vista on one with Linux and Solaris sharing the other. 4 drives with 4OSs!

I know that feeling! Stick around! You'll find some great people here! ;)
