Recent slow downs?

A few months ago I began to experience some very hefty lag (computer and internet) when playing certain games. They'll start out fine as they always have but after about 5-10 minutes, depending on the game, it all goes to poop in a very bad way and renders the game unplayable. Some of the games will fix themselves after around about the same amount of smooth playing time but it just continues through this cycle. The games affected are both COD:MW's, Farcry 2, the recent MOH beta and Civ5 and it's driving me nuts. I'm running a quad 2.8ghz, 3gig ram and a now aging Geforce Go 7950gtx on WinXP SP3. Besides MOH and Civ5 the other games used to run perfect, but now they're the worst ones with MOH and Civ5 experiencing a somewhat lesser effect. I've defragged the game folders, am free from an viruses, have plenty of room to spare and I don't think it's a heat issue (started mid-winter, plus it doesn't heat up anymore than it ever did) so does anyone have any ideas on what the problem is? I'd like to steer clear of a format because I have ALOT of the kids photos and gigs of other stuff, and money's tight so buying a HDD to put it on will take a little saving unfortunately.

Cheers.

TBH it sounds like a case of Winrot, that being your windows install is so old and bloated that it slows down.

You have decent hardware, I would strongly suggest a copy of Windows 7 OEM (Home Premium)

Alternatively, I strongly suggest the following programs:

CCleaner
MalwareBytes
Auslogics Disk Defrag (Much faster than the standard windows one)

All 3 are free and are designed to keep your system up to speed. If you have recovery disks for your machine (assuming it's a laptop or prebuilt desktop) I recommend backing up your stuff to a flash drive, external HDD or DVD's and reformatting and reinstalling windows xp.

I would also recommend going to our Security section of the forum, and posting MalwareBytes and HiJackThis logs (Make sure you update malwarebytes and get the latest version of HJt as it is updated regularly)

Hey thanks, I'll give them a go. I was thinking about going to Win7 so I might give it a format once I manage to get a hold of it. You're probably right about it clogging up, I guess it has been about a year since I did a format anyways. Cheers mate.
